Everything You Thought About Turkey Making You Tired Was a Lie
♫ ♪ Turkey for me, turkey for you! ♫ ♪
Probably since the first-ever Thanksgiving, people were conking out at the table and pointing their fingers at turkey, the holiday stable that just so happens to contain a smidge of the amino acid L-tryptophan, which makes your body produce the happy hormone serotonin plus melatonin, the one that makes you sleepy.
In theory, this combo can make for a very pleasant nap, but the truth, as Time points out, is that turkey has little to do with your annual Thankgiving day siesta. That’s because turkey contains no more tryptophan than any other meat.

Now no one’s saying that the sleepiness you feel after feasting is a B.S. excuse to shrug off dish duty. (You’d never do that!) The struggle is real — it’s just that carbs, which spike your blood sugar then leave you feeling drained, and overeating are more likely culprits. (Remember, after laboriously filling your plate over and over again, your body has to go to work digesting every bite you’ve eaten — and that’s not the only way your body burns calories on Thanksgiving. #Exhausting.)
Of course there are worse things to do on your day off than take a midday nap. So dig in, take a nap, and set your phone alarm to wake you for a second round of dessert. Or turkey, because why TF not?!
